Tips For Caregiver's

People with Alzheimer's disease frequently become more disoriented after dark or when waking. Leaving a night-light on in the bedroom may be helpful.

Very Bad Smells

You know the urine smell that overpowers you upon entering certain nursing home facilities that notifies you immediately of the following two things:

1. The residents are not cleaned/bathed regularly; or

2. The facility is not cleaned thoroughly.

Well I am getting a little frustrated because I have noticed recently when I awake each morning that the hallway leading to Muddear's room has "that" smell. Even Muddear's room has "that" smell which is mystifying because we clean her room regularly and Muddear maintains a rigid bathing schedule. Why is this happening? At 95 soon to be 96 Muddear is continent. I absolutely positively abhor bad smells at anytime of the day, but especially at 5:45 in the morning. Which lead me to an analysis of the situation and the development of two theories:

  1. Theory number one...The aide is not thoroughly cleaning the bedside commode. I have noticed that once I clean the bedside commode the smell disappears. Sharon and I will chat about this today.
  2. Theory number two...my cleaning products have lost their effectiveness. Muddear typically awakes in the middle of the night to use the bathroom in the bedside commode. While this may result in urine sitting within the commode overnight, it is a frequent occurrence and previously never left an odor. Currently we use Lysol Bathroom Cleaner or Lysol Bathroom Cleaner with Bleach to clean the bedside commode. New cleaning products may be the solution.

I need help! Please submit any recommendations. The smell is beyond obnoxious!

This maybe a silly suggestion, but here goes: leave water in the commode at all times to dilute the urine which should decrease the smell.

Thanks for your recommendation, it definitely not a silly suggestion. It is our normal practice after each cleaning to add a little bit of the cleaning product and water into the bedside commode. We have also trained all of the aide's to do the same, which is why I am at a loss as to why we are experiencing the smell.
